Knitting to boost wellbeing: How to knit an Easter chick
Easy and simple to follow step by step pattern I have always enjoyed different crafts from a young age, particularly knitting. At Beautopia I have been exploring ways to improve wellbeing by offering a range of therapeutic treatments such as Massage and Reflexology but in addition there are so many different ways we can boost our wellbeing as well.

"Studies have shown that knitting can help take negative thoughts off the mind and release serotonin, which helps fight depressive states".

I have shared this easy step by step Easter chick pattern for you to follow that I used for the Beautopia Spring display. You can experience the benefits of knitting whether you knit alone or as part of a group and it is easy to get started.

Equipment Needed

  • Yellow 2ply wool or colour of your choice

  • Black 2ply wool for eyes

  • Orange felt for beak

  • Small amount of stuffing

  • Knitting needles size 11

  • Darning needle for stitching the seam & sewing needle for the beak

  • Scissors

Step #1 - Cast on 18 stitches

Step #2 - Knit 6 rows

Step #3 - Cast on 1 stitch at the beginning of the next 4 rows

Now there should be 22 stitches on the needle

Tip: It is always a good idea to do a quick stitch count before moving on to the next step

Step #4 - Cast off 6 stitches at beginning of next 2 rows

Step #5 - knit 6 rows

Step #6 - Sewing the chick together

Leave a 35 cm length of wool for sewing the chick together

Thread needle through remaining stitches on the knitting needle and pull tight to make the head, secure with a stitch

Then over sew the joining seam, when you get to the starting thread, trim and tuck in

Don’t forget to leave a gap to add the stuffing!

Next over sew the remaining gap and cast off

Step #7 - Eyes and Beak

Using the black wool sew a small stitch for an eye on each side of the chicks head and cast off

For the beak cut a small diamond shaped piece of orange felt, fold together and either sew on with a few stitches or attach with glue

Your chick is now complete, well done!
